On the 19th of Ramadan, the first Shia Imam, while saying prayers at the Kufa Mosque, was struck in the head with a poisonous sword by Ibn Muljam Muradi, a Kharijite. He was martyred two days later on the 21st day of Ramadan.
This assassination is seen as a sudden event but as a trend that can even be traced to this day.
Between years 35-40 AH and amid this situation, Imam Ali (AS) became the Caliph, however, he was facing increased restrictions and finally he was assassinated by a Kharijite.
One of the groups that prepared the ground for the elimination of the spiritual and political position of Imam Ali was those who revolted against the Imam despite pledging allegiance to him. They found out that under the government of Imam Ali, there was no room for those who only seek power.
The next group was those provoked and supported by the first group.
The third group was those who sought to gain power in today’s Iraq; they Takfiri reading of Islam among other dangerous deviations and using these false beliefs, they would kill people and take their properties. Known as the fathers of ISIL, they would easily oppress people through Takfirism. They were defeated in the Battle of Nahrawan but Ibn Muljam Muradi managed to escape that battle and gradually get prepared to assassinate the leader of Muslims.
The fourth group was those who had been secretly encouraging people to defy Imam Ali in Kufa.
These movements had been involved in attacking Imam Ali (AS) and the moral principles that he followed.
