Karbala Governor Announces Special Security Plan for Muharram

IQNA – The governor of Iraq’s Karbala announced the details of a special security plan for the month of Muharram in the governorate.

Nassif Jassim al-Khattabi emphasized that this plan is flexible and decisive, and is accompanied by intelligence activity.

Speaking at a press conference in the holy city of Karbala, he said the special plan will be implemented from the first to the 13th day of the lunar Hijri month of Muharram.

This special plan was prepared in the Karbala Operations Command and in the presence of the Iraqi minister of interior and security commanders, he noted.

Al-Khattabi added that security meetings and preemptive measures by the Karbala Operations Command and the police of this province are still ongoing.

According to the governor, the plan primarily relies on the police forces of Karbala Governorate while the security forces and the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) are also active in ensuring security.

Shia Muslims, and others in different parts of the world, hold ceremonies every year in Muharram to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.

The third Shia Imam (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members were martyred by the tyrant of his time - Yazid Bin Muawiya, in the battle of Karbala on the tenth day of Muharram (known as Ashura) in the year 680 AD.

This year, the month of Muharram will start on Friday, June 27, and the day of Ashura will fall on July 6.

A large number of pilgrims are expected to travel to Karbala for the mourning rituals.
