The incident took place on Friday night outside the Islamic Center on Washington Boulevard. According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a driver stopped his vehicle and made offensive comments to several congregants as they were leaving prayer services.

Police say the man has been identified, and the department’s Bureau of Investigation, in coordination with the State’s Attorney’s Office, is reviewing the matter.

The Connecticut chapter of CAIR said in a statement that the harassment was directed at families, including children. The group described it as “a deliberate and targeted verbal assault meant to intimidate Muslim families… as they peacefully left their house of worship.”

The group also encouraged residents to stay vigilant and report any bias-related incidents to police and via its website.
