IQNA – A veteran Iranian Quranic scholar proposed creating an international union of Quranic activists to legally advocate for the rights of the Muslim Ummah.

Iranian Quran expert Seyed Abbas Anjam

Seyed Abbas Anjam made the remarks in an interview with IQNA, speaking ahead of the anniversary of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birthday.

“Reactions from the Quranic community to certain threats against the Islamic Ummah, like the atrocities in Gaza, are notable,” Anjam said. “However, since they are individual reactions, they will not have a lasting impact.”

He argued that a unified, international body could more effectively pursue the demands of the Muslim world’s Quranic community.

He expressed deep regret that members of the Muslim community are suffering. “It is deeply regrettable that a group within the Ummah of the Prophet of Mercy are captives to a bunch of demon-like beings in Gaza and other parts of the world,” Anjam stated.

The expert emphasized that the current situation in the Gaza Strip, where the Israeli regime has been waging a genocidal war, underscores the need for such an entity.

He added that the Quranic community, including reciters and memorizers, holds significant influence but lacks coordination. Their current advocacy efforts are often personal and disjointed, he noted.

“In these circumstances, there is a missing link for a syndicate or union,” Anjam said. “This would be a platform for appropriate reactions from the Quranic community to threats against the Muslim world.”

He envisioned a tribune that can present impactful, legal responses, saying this would pressure various political, social, and cultural institutions to take notice.

Anjam pointed to the existing International Islamic Broadcasting Union as a successful model, saying that a similar structure could be used for a Quranic union to launch legal campaigns.

“The Quranic community, especially reciters, hold great esteem among the people,” he said. “If this influence is gathered into an international union, it will significantly impact the relations between Islamic countries.”

He referenced a recent statement by Iranian Quran reciters addressed to their Egyptian counterparts. It called on them to break their silence on Gaza. Anjam suggested such an appeal would carry more weight if it came from an official legal and Quranic authority.

“Without a doubt, if such a matter was raised by a legal and Quranic reference, it would create public expectation,” he concluded.
