IQNA – Wakefield Council has approved plans to turn a disused call centre into a mosque.

Former Call Centre in Wakefield Approved for Mosque Conversion

A vacant building in Thornes, Wakefield, will be converted into a place of worship after councillors granted planning permission.

The Tadman Street site, once home to Kingspan, has stood empty for about three years before being purchased by a charity with the help of public donations, Wakefield Express reported on Saturday.

Documents submitted to the council said a replacement facility was required after a city centre prayer venue closed due to redevelopment. The new mosque will be permitted to open from 6am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday.

Planning records show 454 people supported the application, with many citing the need for a worship space for local Muslims. There were 194 objections, mainly over traffic and parking concerns.

Highways officers initially raised safety issues, warning of risks at busy times. However, these concerns were withdrawn after the applicant provided a transport assessment.

The application also included plans for a madrassa, with weekday evening classes for up to 20 children. It stated that attendees would be encouraged to walk, cycle, or use public transport, while car use would be restricted through measures such as car sharing.
