IQNA – The International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) called on Egypt’s Al-Azhar Islamic Center to issue a Fatwa (religious edict) in support of the Palestinian people.

IUMS president and secretary general, Sheikh Ali al-Qaradaghi and Sheikh Ali Muhammad al-Salabi, Al-Azhar chief Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb

IUMS president and secretary general, Sheikh Ali al-Qaradaghi and Sheikh Ali Muhammad al-Salabi, wrote an open letter to Al-Azhar chief Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, praising him for his decisive stances against the Israeli regime’s aggression on Palestinians.

The two IUMS officials emphasized that Al-Azhar has been a historical platform for supporting the oppressed and defending the ideals of the Islamic Ummah, and its pioneering role in resisting Israeli occupation and colonialism has been prominent.

In this letter, they called for an explicit Fatwa on the need to support the Gaza Strip, lift the siege, and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, considering this a religious, moral, and human duty.

They also expressed hope that Al-Azhar would take strong positions to break the siege and stop the aggression against Gaza, and warned of God’s wrath against those who do not support the oppressed.

Last week, Sheikh al- Qaradaghi had issued a statement in support of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, emphasizing that defending the children, women, and men of Gaza is the responsibility of the Islamic Ummah.

He said, “Anyone who fails to support these oppressed people while they are capable of doing it has betrayed the covenant of brotherhood and religion and is subject to the threat of God, who said: “And the angels who take those who wronged themselves will say: ‘In what condition were you?’ They will reply ‘We were oppressed in the land.’ They (the angels) will say: ‘Was not the earth of Allah wide enough for you in order that you migrate in it?’ Those, their shelter will be Gehenna (Hell), an evil arrival. (Verse 97 of Surah An-Nisa)”
