In a statement delivered to IQNA on the occasion of the Prophet’s birth anniversary, al-Yaqoobi stressed that this year’s commemoration carries special significance, coinciding with 15 centuries since “the granting of this divine mercy to the world.”
Drawing on the Quran, he underlined that the Prophet was presented as the best model for humanity to emulate.
“God Almighty chose His noble Messenger to be a good example for us because he is the most perfect creation adorned with the highest human virtues, and all attributes of perfection were gathered in him,” al-Yaqoobi said.
Citing verse 21 of Surah al-Ahzab — “Indeed, in the Messenger of God you have an excellent example for whoever hopes in God and the Last Day and remembers God often” — the marja’ emphasized that the verse was not limited to believers of the Prophet’s time but addressed to all of humanity. “Everyone is called to follow the truth and reach reality,” he explained.

He further noted that the Prophet’s conduct was so deeply intertwined with the Quran that his wife famously described him as embodying its teachings. “His character was taken from the Quran,” al-Yaqoobi said, adding that this made him the living example of divine guidance.
The cleric highlighted that taking the Prophet as an example goes beyond personal piety; it is a collective responsibility that safeguards the Muslim community.
He argued that neglecting this principle has left many Muslims vulnerable to division, dependency, and the influence of “bad examples” such as extremist groups who distort Islam and drive people away from its true teachings.
Quoting Imam Ali (AS), al-Yaqoobi warned against following misguided leaders: “Do not let the deviation of others mislead you from the right path.” He added that history has shown how corrupt leadership can lead entire nations astray.

The marja’ also linked the importance of emulating the Prophet to preparing for the reappearance of Imam al-Mahdi. “One of our responsibilities is to pave the way for the blessed emergence by convincing humanity of authentic Muhammadan Islam,” he said. The best way to achieve this, he argued, is by embodying the Prophet’s model in everyday life.
Al-Yaqoobi concluded his message with a prayer for the triumph of Islam and steadfastness on the divine path: “We ask God Almighty to grant His noble Prophet the praised station He promised, to make religion victorious over all others, and to keep us firm upon His straight path.”
