The Newton Mearns Islamic Centre said the incident happened on Monday afternoon as the girl was returning from Eastwood High School. She was allegedly confronted on Harvie Avenue by a man who assaulted her and made anti-Muslim remarks.
The centre said it had contacted police, MPs and councillors, calling for the attacker to be “brought to justice.” In a statement, it also raised concerns about an earlier incident on Harvie Avenue involving a 15-year-old girl on July 16, 2024. It urged authorities to consider further measures to protect children and prevent similar incidents, STV News reported on Thursday.
The statement added: “Furthermore, we need to make sure that Islamophobic incidents are treated as hate crimes and dealt with accordingly. A further update will be provided as information becomes available. In the meantime, we request parents and members of the community to be vigilant and report any incidents or suspicious behaviour to your nearest mosque. We will ensure every report is followed up and push for action to be taken.”
