Muslim Uber Driver Faces Knife Threat in Montreal, NCCM Says

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) says the incident occurred on Dec. 6 near Place Jean-Paul-Riopelle in downtown Montreal, City News reported on Tuesday.

According to the organization, a passenger allegedly demanded that the driver disclose his religious faith before issuing a death threat and producing a knife.

The NCCM reports that the situation de-escalated only after another passenger intervened, preventing further violence. No injuries were reported.

The organization said the incident was reported to Uber and to Montreal police.

The NCCM noted that details are still being verified and that it remains in contact with law enforcement.

In a statement, NCCM chief executive officer Stephen Brown described the alleged attack as deeply concerning and urged political leaders to respond.

“It is deeply troubling to see something like this happen here, in our own province of Quebec. Muslims are not a threat. It is time for our political leaders to say this clearly and take action to stop the rise of hatred,” he said.

The NCCM called on Quebec and Canadian officials to publicly condemn the incident and to take concrete steps to address anti-Muslim hatred. The group added that no one should fear for their safety because of their religion.

The reported case comes amid broader concerns about Islamophobia in Canada. Statistics Canada has documented an increase in police-reported hate crimes targeting Muslims in recent years, while advocacy groups, including the NCCM, have warned of a rise in anti-Muslim incidents across the country, particularly in major urban centres.
