IQNA – The second edition of the translation of the Holy Quran into Bosnian by Asad Durakovic, a university professor and member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts (ANU) of Bosnia and Herzegovina, has arrived in Sarajevo from Istanbul.

The translation was published on the last day of 2025 and was one of the most important cultural events of the last days of the year.

Durakovic told Radiosarajevo.ba, “I could not imagine a better New Year’s gift! The first edition was published a long time ago in 2004 in 7,000 copies and all copies have long been sold out. Each translation of the Holy Quran into our language has its own cultural and historical place and value; each one brings something new. My translation is distinguished from other translations by the fact that I tried - as much as possible - to convey at least some of its supernatural stylistic beauty. Linguistically, we know that the original text is in simple language, that is, in rhymed and rhythmic prose, and in our translations it is conveyed exclusively in the form of prose.”

As a university professor of Arabic literature, Durakovic, as he himself says, tried to convey some of that form and style by using rhythm and rhyme and in a way that makes the translation unusual as a sacred text.

The professor at the National University of Sarajevo added: "At the end of the Quran, I listed a list of rhymes for each surah. Many have told me that when they read my translation, they suddenly feel the need to read it aloud. This is the requirement of a rhymed and rhythmic sacred text.

After the first edition, Durakovic reviewed and revised the text of his translation for about twenty years, which shows the exceptional dedication of an outstanding linguist, orientalist, and translator. There were also several technical errors in the first edition, which have now been corrected.

Durakovic hoped it will be received positively, saying, “I am glad that I was able to finish the second, revised edition before I go to the other world.”
