Speaking at a national prayer gathering in Putrajaya, Ibrahim warned that advancements in AI must be balanced with ethics, values, and spiritual depth, Bernama reported on Sunday.
Addressing a crowd at the Malaysia Bermunajat 2025 event, Anwar pointed to the importance of maintaining a strong link between religious scholars and national leaders to navigate the complexities of modern life.
He cautioned that without a foundation in understanding and enlightenment, safety and direction cannot be assured. Anwar noted that while Malaysia is progressing in AI development, such progress must be rooted in Islamic principles to avoid becoming dependent on Western models.

He also emphasized the historical role of traditional Islamic schools in preserving religious identity and resisting colonial influence. “When colonial forces took over our education, economy, and culture, one source of strength endured—the pondok and pesantren. They preserved the soul of Islam, our knowledge, and the spirit of resistance,” he said.
Anwar advocated for integrating these traditional institutions into the national education system, ensuring that their students are equipped with modern skills, including digital literacy and technical training, while remaining true to Islamic values.
He called for a renewed focus on Islamic scholarship across disciplines, from religious sciences to governance and technology, and highlighted Malaysia’s ongoing efforts to serve as a global platform for inclusive Islamic dialogue.
