Abdulzahra Al-Tamimi, professor at the College of Education for Human Sciences at Ibn Rushd University of Baghdad, described the Arbaeen pilgrimage as a living embodiment of Imam Hussein’s (AS) uprising.

The martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), Al-Tamimi said, was a cry of “no” to oppressors and a declaration that “a person like me will never pledge allegiance to people like you.”

Love and attachment to Imam Hussein (AS), he added, “rekindles the spark of fighting falsehood in the hearts of Muslims,” ensuring that his followers “always terrify their enemies and strike fear into tyrants at all times and in all places.”

“The Arbaeen walk creates and highlights a contemporary Islamic reality,” he told IQNA. “Through social solidarity and its lofty goals, linked to the eternal uprising of Imam Hussein (AS) and its aims, it will contribute to the expansion of Islamic civilization.”

Arbaeen marks the 40th day after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), in the 7th-century Battle of Karbala. Each year, millions of pilgrims—many walking for days—travel to Karbala, Iraq, to honor his stand against tyranny. It is one of the largest peaceful gatherings in the world.

Al-Tamimi said the pilgrimage reflects “the true image of Islam in expressing humanity, fighting oppression and global arrogance, and achieving brotherhood among Muslims and humanity among other societies.”

He called it a historic extension of a key Islamic event that, in his view, prepares the ground for “an Islamic government under the leadership of Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his advent).”

“Imam Hussein (AS) is a global figure unmatched in Islam and Shia tradition,” Al-Tamimi noted. “We have heard and read abundant praise from Muslims and non-Muslims for this great personality. In him, followers of various faiths find humanity.”

He added that all people, regardless of religion, “find in Imam Hussein’s (AS) struggle something that strengthens their humanity,” which explains the deep affection shown by people of different beliefs during Arbaeen.
