Directed by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the prayer is to be held 30 minutes before Friday’s midday service, local Emirati outlets reported on Tuesday. The ritual follows prophetic guidance, asking worshippers to turn to God for mercy in the form of rain.
Istisqa is a traditional Islamic prayer invoked during drought or low rainfall periods. It is considered a confirmed Sunnah, based on early Muslim practice.

The prayer usually consists of two units (rakʿahs), with the Quran recited aloud, and is performed without the usual call to prayer (adhan or iqama). Some narrations indicate that the Prophet (PBUH) turned his cloak inside-out while praying, as an act of humility.
Rain is rare in this region’s arid climate. The UAE’s average yearly precipitation lies between 140 and 200 millimetres. However, 2025 has seen far below-normal rainfall: reports indicate a significant shortfall compared with previous years.
