IQNA – Plans to convert a vacant industrial building in Stafford into a mosque and community centre have received approval from the borough council

Stafford: Council Approves Plans for New Mosque and Community Centre

The application was submitted by the Stafford Muslim Community Centre for a former industrial unit on Sandyford Street. The proposal aims to bring the unused site back into operation as a place of worship and a community facility, according to Express and Star.

The scheme attracted both support and opposition during the consultation period. Planning officers reported that relevant authorities, including highways and flood risk teams, raised no formal objections.

The council’s planning committee subsequently voted to approve the application.

Under the approved plans, the existing building will be extended to create new entrances. A separate single-storey structure will also be built for use as a mortuary.

Inside the main building, the layout will include prayer halls, classrooms, a kitchen and office areas. Vehicle access will remain from Sandyford Street, with parking provided on site.

Some residents raised concerns about parking capacity and potential congestion. However, highways officers assessed the parking provision as adequate, subject to conditions, while flood risk officers said the proposed use was suitable for the site, with mitigation measures in place.

Speaking on behalf of the applicants, agent Mohammed Afaq said that: “We have looked at the parking, and noise and other issues… From day one we’ve been quite open in responding to any query.”

Councillor Jill Hood said the development would have a positive impact on the area. She stated, “It seems that every condition has been met… I think it’s good that there’s a building that will be made to look attractive.”
