IQNA – York Mosque and Islamic Centre will host its annual open day next month, inviting the wider community to learn more about Islam and challenge common misconceptions.

The event, part of the national Visit My Mosque initiative, will take place on Sunday, October 5, from 2pm to 4pm at the mosque on Bull Lane, The York Press reported on Sunday.

Now in its tenth year, the open day will run under the theme Flag-Bearers of Unity: Tea, Talk and Shared Values.

Organizers say the aim is to build understanding between people of different faiths and backgrounds. Visitors will be able to view exhibitions on Islamic values, hear about the mosque’s community projects, and speak directly with volunteers.

Faizal Mohamudbuccus, ambassador for York Mosque, said previous open days had been well received and provided an opportunity to “spread peace” while addressing misunderstandings about Islam.

“There are many misconceptions about our faith,” he said, adding that events like this help explain what it means to be both Muslim and British.

The mosque also works closely with local organizations to support vulnerable residents, including hosting a free community kitchen every other Thursday, which now serves more than 100 people.
