According to Al-Muslimun website, the mosque was reopened for prayers on the occasion of its 200th anniversary and after a comprehensive renovation.
Sheikh Rawil Gaynetdin, the Grand Mufti of Russia and Head of the Religious Administration of Muslims of Russia, delivered a Friday sermon at the historic mosque last week, announcing that worship has begun in the mosque after the renovation of its interior and exterior.
The mosque had been renovated in 1992 and was renovated again over the past two years at the initiative of the Grand Mufti, with the direct support of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and at the expense of the country’s ministry of culture.
The renovation of the historic mosque is an important step towards the revival of the Islamic and cultural heritage of Russian Muslims and will enhance the status of this historical site, which symbolizes the long-standing presence of Islam in Moscow.
The Mufti of Russia, by decision of the General Council of the Religious Administration on September 20, 2024, appointed Mufti Demir Muhyiddin as the imam and main preacher of the historic mosque.

The reopening of the mosque is a sign of cooperation between the government and the Muslim community of Russia. Such projects can be strengthened with the support of the Islamic world through the exchange of expertise in the field of restoration of historical heritage, so that it continues to maintain its role as a religious and cultural center for the Muslims of Moscow and visitors.
