IQNA – Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) called for people to participate in masses in the commemoration ceremonies marking the sixth anniversary of the martyrdom of the ‘Victory Commanders’.

Lt General Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis

In a statement, the PMU urged people to participate in a million-strong march on January 2, 2026 to mark the sixth anniversary of the martyrdom of Lt General Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, and a number of their companions.

The march is scheduled to be held after Maghrib prayer at the site where the Victory Commanders were targeted in a US attack.

The statement addressed to the people reads, “Your presence in this march is a renewal of the covenant and a strong message that the path of the martyrs continues and the blood shed in the way of preserving Iraq will not be trampled upon, and those who think that terror is the end of the path (of resistance) are deluded; the path (of resistance) continues and the flag will never fall to the ground.”

On January 3, 2020, a US drone strike authorized by Donald Trump near Baghdad International Airport killed top Iranian anti-terror commander General Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and his Iraqi trenchmate Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who was the PMU’s deputy chief.

Both commanders were admired by Muslim nations for their role in eliminating the US-sponsored Daesh Takfiri terrorist group in the region, particularly in Iraq and Syria.

Just two days after the assassination, Iraqi lawmakers approved a bill, demanding the withdrawal of all foreign military forces led by the United States from the country.
